Services Available

Academic and Career Advising

Our Advising Specialist will assist students with career decision making, goal setting, transferring to a four-year institution, and provide individual academic advising. Choices (a career exploration program) is also available on STARS computers to help students choose careers of interest.

Workshops

Free workshops are provided by the STARS staff and outside speakers. Workshops will include various topics such as goal setting, career exploration, test taking, writing research papers, using the graphing calculator, and stress management.

Academic Support

The STARS staff is committed to helping students achieve academic success. Free tutoring is available in various subject areas by request. Tutoring is provided by student peer tutors/mentors, professional tutors/mentors, and by the Reading/English Specialist and Math Specialist.

Students will have access to our computers in the STARS computer lab. Each computer is loaded with various software programs including tutorial software, learning styles assessments, and other interest inventories. Students also have free access to the Internet.

Each student will have an Individual Student Plan or ISP completed. The student will indicate on the ISP the services he or she is interested in receiving through the STARS Program. Degree checks are also completed to ensure the courses are equivalent with the students degree plan.

Each student will be matched with a member of the STARS staff who will be their "STARS advisor". The STARS advisor will assist the student with early pre-enrollment, completion of the ISP and serve as a contact person for the student.

Cultural Activities

Students will have the opportunity to attend cultural and enrichment activities throughout the year with members of the STARS staff. Cultural activities may be local or out of town. All expenses are free for students in the STARS program. Some past trips have included visiting art museums, River Dance, STOMP, Olympic Champions on Ice, and dinner theatres.

Direct Financial Assistance

Grant Aid is available to STARS participants who are eligible to receive a Pell Grant based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The amount of funds available may vary each year and is based on individual financial aid eligibility. Students must also participate in other STARS program activities to receive Grant Aid.

Campus Visits to Universities

The STARS staff will arrange campus visits to four-year institutions. Students will have the opportunity to meet with the Student Support Services staff to learn about services available at the university level. Students will also meet with the admissions counselor and faculty advisors. Transportation and lunch is free for students in the STARS program.
