This course includes a study of the aging process and its related conditions and the nursing skills required in assisting geriatric residents to reach and maintain their highest level of wellness consistent with the limitations imposed by the aging process. This ninety (90) clock hour course includes forty-five (45) hours of theory and forty-five (45) hours of supervised clinical experience in a nursing home. This course prepares students for the Certified Nurses Aide Exam. The CNA course is the first step on the Allied Health ladder. This means that you must have successfully completed the CNA course before moving on to some other allied health classes. Once you have successfully completed the CNA course, you will be eligible to enroll in the Certified Medication Aide (CMA) or Home Health Aide courses. Neosho County Community College and the Mary Grimes School of Nursing require students to have completed the CNA course prior to applying for admission to the nursing program. The CNA classes offered by Neosho County Community College are approved and regulated by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. [Back to Top] CNA FAQ’s CERTIFIED MEDICATION AIDE (CMA) The Certified Medication Aide or CMA is a 75-hour course that trains students to safely administer medications. This course includes the study of medications and their physiological effect on the body. Emphasis will be placed on the identification and abbreviations of drugs, weights and measures, and procedures used in dispensing medication. This sixty (60) clock hour course includes forty-five (45) hours of lecture and fifteen (15) hours of supervised clinical experience in an adult care home. The CMA classes offered by Neosho County Community College are approved and regulated by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The CMA certificate is valid for two years from the date issued. To maintain a valid certificate, you must complete, at any time during those two years, a program of 10 hours of continuing education. If your certificate expires, it may be reinstated by taking an approved continuing education course within three years of the expiration date. If your certificate has been expired for more than three years, you are required to retake the 75-hour MEDICATION AIDE course. Neosho County Community College offers a 10-hour CMA Update course during each semester as continuing education for CMA’s. This course provides the student with a review of the basic principals and skills of medication administration for oral and external application. This course may be repeated for credit. [Back to Top] HOME HEALTH AIDE This course focuses on the role and responsibilities of a Home Health Aide within the home setting, with emphasis on maintaining a safe, health home environment. Providing a personal care regimen which meets the needs of the client is also discussed. Classroom and laboratory experience provided. Student must be a Kansas Certified Nurse Aide and pass the CASAS reading exam. [Back to Top] Restorative Aide Students will learn to deliver effective and efficient rehabilitative care of residents in nursing homes and rehabilitative hospitals under the direction of a Registered Physical Therapist or Registered Occupational Therapist. The students will learn how to promote the patient to achieve his/her potential physically, socially, psychologically, and vocationally. [Back to Top] Social Service Designee This course is designed to train the student to provide activity programs for residents in skilled care facilities. The student will learn the aging process, basic human needs, general concepts of human behavior, and attitudes on aging. In addition, students will learn social work practice, approaches to counseling, and the function and use of consultants. Social Service Designee must be taken concurrently with Activities Director, Skilled Care Facility. [Back to Top] Activities Director, Skilled Care Facility This course builds on the educational outcomes from the Social Service Designee course. In addition, the students will learn the philosophy of human behavior, and the philosophy, concepts, and techniques of therapeutic activities for personnel who work with the residents in long-term care facilities. Students will also learn the techniques for motivating resident participation in adapting activities to individual resident abilities within an environment. Activities Director, Skilled Care Facility must be taken concurrently with Social Service Designee. [Back to Top] Community CPR The CPR course trains students in first aid for choking as well as in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for adults, infants, & children. Certificates in CPR may be earned. [Back to Top] First Responder This course addresses information and techniques currently considered to be the responsibilities of the Emergency First Responder according to the National Standard DOT Curriculum, as well as some additional responsibilities required by the Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services for certification as First Responder in Kansas. [Back to Top] Emergency Medical Technician- Basic This program is designed for individuals interested in providing medical care to patients in the pre-hospital setting. It will provide the participant with opportunities to gain information, skills and attitudes necessary for certification and practice as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in the State of Kansas. Students must be 18 years old before testing for certification. [Back to Top] Emergency Medical Technician- Intermediate This course is designed for individuals interested in providing care to patients in the pre-hospital setting. The course will provide the participant with opportunities to gain information, skills, and attitudes necessary for certification and practice as an Emergency Medical Technician- Intermediate (EMT-I) in the State of Kansas. This course addresses information and techniques currently considered to be the responsibilities of the EMT-I according to the United States Department of Transportation, National Standard Curriculum, and the Kansas authorized activities for the Emergency Medical Technician- Intermediate. Students must be a Kansas EMT-B. [Back to Top] Medical Terminology This course provides the student with the basic tools for building a medical vocabulary. It emphasizes the building of medical terms from prefixes, suffixes, word roots and combining forms. Emphasis is also placed on correct pronunciation, spelling, and analysis of medical terms as they pertain to anatomy, physiology, and diseases.
