What is the GED?
GED stands for General Educational Development. The GED Test is a
national examination developed by the GED Testing Service of the
American Council on Education. More than 95% of employers in the U.S.
consider GED graduates the same as traditional high school graduates in
regard to hiring, salary, and opportunity for advancement.

You will receive a Kansas State High School Diploma upon successful
completion of the GED exams.
What is on the GED?
The GED exam has five parts: (1) language arts-writing (2) social
studies, (3) science, (4) language arts-reading and (5) mathematics.
Language Arts-Writing – This test has two parts: (1) editing sentences
and proofreading for errors, and (2) essay writing.

Part 1 has 50 questions and a 75
minute time limit. Part 1 tests the ability to edit and correct
problems in sentence structure (30%), usage (30%),mechanics
(25%) and organization (15%). Letters, memos, and
business-related documents are likely to be included. |

Part 2 is an essay with a 45
minute time limit. You will write a well-developed essay
presenting an opinion or an explanation on a topic familiar to
most adults. |
Social Studies – The test consists of 50 questions and has an 80
minute time limit. Questions cover U.S. history (25%), economics (20%),
geography (15%), world history (15%), civics and government (25%).
Science – The test consists of 50 questions and has an 80 minute time
limit. Questions cover earth science (20%), life science (45%), and
physical science (35%).
Language Arts-Reading –The test consists of 40 questions and has a 65
minute time limit. The test measures how well you understand selections
from literary text - poem, drama, fiction (75%),and non-fiction -
business documents, prose, critical reviews (25%).
Mathematics – The test has two parts which consist mainly of word
problems to be solved in the areas of number operations,
measurement/geometry, data, statistics, probability and algebra. Both
parts of the test will include problems without multiple-choice answers.
These problems will require you to mark your answers on bubble-in number
grids or on coordinate plane graphs.

Part 1 has 25 questions with a 45
minute time limit and will permit the use of the Casio fx-260
calculator, which will be provided at the test site. The
calculator will eliminate the tediousness of making complex
calculations. |

Part 2 has 25 questions with a 45
minute time limit and will not permit the use of the calculator.

Who May Take The Tests?
To take the GED exams you must:

Be a Kansas resident |
 |
Pass the official GED Practice
Test with a minimum score of 410 and an average score of 450. |
 |
Currently NOT be enrolled in High
School |
 |
Not be a high school or GED
graduate |
 |
Be 16 years of age or older*
*if under 18 years of age you must obtain Compulsory Attendance
Exemption Forms from your last high school before you may attend
the Adult Education Program. |

Pay the $65 non-refundable,
non-transferable testing fee. |
What are some hints for
the GED?
This section is a quick guide to help you. Nothing will prepare you for
the GED’s five parts like studying. These hints, though, might give you
a bit of an advantage.
Scheduling:
Testing is done once per month.
See calendar for testing dates
You must make an appointment to take the GED test.
Arrival Time:
Arrive early. If you are late, you will not be allowed to take the test.
Emergency situation:
If an emergency keeps you from attending, please call to reschedule your
testing.
Materials:
(1) Complete appropriate paperwork
(2) Bring a current Kansas driver’s license or Kansas I.D. card.
(3) Bring proof of payment of your fee
Test preparation:
Study and review the GED practice questions and information before the
test.
Test session format:
The tests are timed. Try to be halfway through the test when half of
your time is used up.
Tests results:
Your scores will be mailed to you. If your scores are lower than you
like, the staff is very interested in helping you improve those scores.
