The NCCC Debate/Forensics team is enjoying a winning season. The team received the 5th Place Sweepstakes Award at their first tournament in Weatherford, OK at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Oct. 10th and 11th. Individual event winners include: Kimberly Hawkinson, Savonburg freshman Gold Award in Prose; Brionna Pennington, Kansas City freshman, Silver Award in Dramatic Interpretation. The Readers Theatre entry received the Silver Award. It was directed by Deidre Ornelas, Chanute sophmore. The cast consists of: Justin Collins, Chanute freshman; Kimberly Hawkinson, Savonburg freshman; Jennifer Diller, Chanute freshman, and Kaye Brownlee, Chanute freshman. At the team's second tournament, in Ada Oklahoma at East Central University, on Oct. 24th and 25th, the Novice debate team, Chris Boynton, Yates Center freshman and Brionna Pennington, Kansas City freshman, received the Tournament Championship in Novice Debate. The NCCC Reader's Theatre, noted earlier, received First Place by a unanimous vote from the judges. Individual event winners include: Chris Boynton, Yates Center freshman, received 3rd place in After Dinner Speaking, 4th Place in Extemp Speaking, and 5th Place in Duo with Dawn Rickerson, Fredonia freshman. Crystal Presley, Chanute freshman received 4th place in Prose and 3rd Place in Duo with Bill Norris, Yates Center freshman. Jennifer Diller, Chanute freshman, received 5th Place in Dramatic Interpretation; Kimberly Hawkinson, Savonburg freshman, received 6th Place in Poetry; Justin Collins, Chanute freshman, received 3rd Place in Poetry; Derick Farmer, Altoona-Midway sophmore, received 5th Place in Prose. The NCCC Debate/Forensics team, under the direction of Tosca Harris, completed a winning fall season with a tournament at Tulsa Community College, November 7th and 8th. Ian Thomson, Pittsburg sophmore, won the Lincoln/Douglas Debate Championship by defeating a student from east Central University in the finals. Chris Boynton, Yates Center freshman and Brionna Pennington, Kansas City freshman placed 2nd in Novice Team Debate, being defeated by a team from East Central University. NCCC also won the Reader's Theatre Championship with The Malefactor's Bloody Register, directed by Deidre Ornelas, Chanute; with Justin Collins, Chanute freshman; Kimberly Hawkinson, Savonburg freshman; Jenny Diller, Chanute freshman; and Kaye Brownlee, Chanute freshman as the cast. NCCC also won the 3rd Place Sweepstakes for Individual Events. In Individual Events Derick Farmer Altoona-Midway freshman won the Prose Interpretation Championship; Kimberly Hawkinson, Savonburg freshman received 3rd place in Dramatic Interp; Brionna Pennington, Kansas City freshman received 4th place in Poetry Interp; and Ian Thomson, Pittsburg sophmore received 4th place in Persuasive Speaking. The spring season will open in February with a tournament at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, OK. |
