Developmental Education
Neosho County Community College Developmental Education


Developmental Education Mission:

• To enrich developmental education student lives by addressing academic preparedness and by preparing them for postsecondary success.

Developmental education contributes to NCCC’s mission and purposes by helping the underprepared students to develop the skills and competencies needed to become better students and lifelong learners.




Program Outcomes are:

1. To prepare students for post secondary education
2. To provide a foundation for learning



Courses in Program:

Developmental education includes the following courses: Reading Proficiency, Fundamentals of Written Communications, Contemporary Math Concepts, Beginning Algebra, Intermediate Algebra as well as Nursing Math Skills, Grammar and Writing for Speakers of Other Languages, and Listening and Reading for Bilingual Speakers. The Study and Test Taking Skills and Goal Setting courses also fall under developmental education.

Assessment methods:

Each course uses similar assessment methods, which includes but not limited to pre and post testing, Compass testing, chapter/unit tests, final exams. Each instructor completes an end-of-semester assessment for the college, using the college assessment form. Assessment of students missing class, being withdrawn from class or withdrawing from class is done by talking to the students and instructors.

Efforts to stay current in curriculum:

Members of the developmental education group have attended National Association of Developmental Education (NADE) conferences, attended Missouri Regional Association of Developmental Education (MRADE) in October. Developmental education holds monthly meetings with all the developmental instructors and administrators.

Developmental Classes:

CURR 102 GOAL SETTING
1 credit hour

This course is designed to teach students how to
manage their lives through life planning, job search
techniques and professional development. Students
will establish goals and learn specific techniques to
achieve those goals and personal growth. This course
serves an elective for degree-seeking students and
those in certificate programs.

CURR 101 STUDY SKILLS/TEST TAKING
STRATEGIES
2 credit hours

This course is designed for students to learn study
skills and test taking strategies that will provide them
with the necessary skills to be successful in college.
Topics for the course will include but are not limited to:
note taking strategies, learning styles/personality
indicators, study strategies, resource usage/research
skills, stress management/test anxiety, test taking
strategies and textbook usage.

ENGL 013 FUNDAMENTALS OF WRITTEN
COMMUNICATION
5 credit hours

This course will present an organized method for
understanding and using correct grammar in
sentences and paragraphs. The course will also
present an organized method of paragraph
development that emphasizes unity, support, and
coherence. Major areas of instruction include prewriting,
topic sentences, transitions, support of main
idea, and paragraph logic. This course is nontransferable
and will not count toward graduation.

ENGL 015 GRAMMAR and WRITING FOR
STUDENTS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (GWSOL)
5 credit hours

This course addresses the needs of students of other
languages in the area of grammar and writing. It is
designed to improve skills in standard written English
to better prepare the student to succeed in college
courses. This course is non-transferable and will not
count toward graduation.

ENGL 016 LISTENING and READING FOR
STUDENTS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (LRSOL)
3 credit hours

This intensive language course is aimed at preparing
students who are non-native speakers of English to
enter academic courses conducted completely in
English. This course will focus on listening, speaking,
and reading skills with a particular emphasis on note
taking and comprehension. This course is nontransferable
and will not count toward graduation.

ENGL 018 READING PROFICIENCY II
3 credit hours

This course emphasizes improving basic reading skills,
spelling, comprehension, vocabulary building, study skills,
and reference skills. ENGL 018 may be repeated to
improve proficiency. This course is non-transferable and
will not count toward graduation.

MATH 010 CONTEMPORARY MATHEMATICS
CONCEPTS
2 credit hours

This course is designed for students who want, need,
or are recommended for a refresher course dealing
with the four operations of fractions and decimals,
calculating percentage, and solving ratios. This
course is non-transferable and will not count toward
graduation.

MATH 011 BEGINNING ALGEBRA
3 credit hours

This is a course designed for students with no
background in algebra. Successful completion of this
course should prepare the student to enter
Intermediate Algebra or College Algebra with Review
with the expectation of successful completion. Topics
covered are: signed numbers and operations,
manipulation of simple algebraic expressions,
equations and inequalities, polynomials, and rational
expressions. Students will be expected to have
access to a scientific calculator. This course is nontransferable
and will not count toward graduation.

MATH 112 INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA
3 credit hours

This is a course designed for students with a minimal
background in algebra. Topics covered are: equations
and inequalities, absolute value, functions and graphs,
polynomials, rational expressions and radicals, and
systems of equations and inequalities. Students will
be expected to have access to a scientific calculator.
This course may not transfer credit to another
institution, dependent upon graduation requirements
for particular programs and institutions as described in
their catalogs.

NURS 010 NURSING MATH SKILLS
1 credit hour

Nursing math skills is designed for students who want,
need, or are recommended for a “refresher” course
dealing with the four operations on fractions and
decimals, calculating percentages, and solving ratios.
Also included in nursing math skills are the following:
Converting between and within the Apothecary, Metric,
and English systems of measure; child and adult
medication calculation, and IV calculations. This
course is non-transferable and will not count toward
graduation.
