NEOSHO HAMMERS HASTINGS
Neosho traveled Wednesday night for a neutral
site dual with Hastings College of Nebraska an NAIA school and
earned Coach Wayne Petterson a tally in the win column in his return
to his hometown of Beloit, Kansas. Hastings who entered the event
receiving votes in the NAIA rankings, were facing an uphill battle
from the start, when they had to forfeit the first 3 weight classes
due to injury and health problems. Once the action got started,
Neosho was able to keep the momentum in the dual when Justin
Ringgold opened up with a 7-4 decision victory at 149. Shawn
Thomas and Mike Vieira once again had mirror like efforts, this time
however Thomas would win by a major decision while Vieira would pick
up a win by fall. Coasting along at a 31-0 team score, Neosho
would face its toughest challenger of the night when Jameon Rush
who is ranked in the NAIA would use 3 takedowns in the 1st
period before turning Aaron Butler and pinning the Panther wrestler
in the closing seconds of the first period. Momentum looked to
now be in the favor of Hastings, when Andrew Sorenson stepped onto
the mat and faced NJCAA ranked Ralph Manous. Sorenson opened up
with a quick 5 point move and would add on an additional 5 more
points in the first period and go up by a 10-3 lead. In the 2nd
period a quick reverse widened the gap as Manous was now down
12-3. Manous would reply with an escape and then his athleticisim
finally showed when the Okmulgee freshman would score a takedown
that would catch Sorenson off guard and counting the lights with the
fall coming soon thereafter. Neosho would have Kris Powell suffer a
loss by fall at 197 and Jake Kober would pull out a takedown needed
to win in sudden victory to allow Neosho to break the 40 point
plateau for the first time this season. In exhibition matches,
Josh Wolfe recorded a 7-4 victory, while Cody Eaton a native of
nearby Bennington, KS ended the night with a fall at the 2:20
mark. Panthers are next in action at home on Monday for their
final home dual of the season.

Panther wrestling splits with Regional Foes
16th ranked Neosho County hosted 2
regional foes on January 9th at the Chanute Campus
gymnasium. In the first dual of the day the Panthers would host 5th
ranked Northwest Wyoming under the guidance of former Coffeyville
native Jim Ziegler. The dual started at 125 with NW being ranked 5th
and NCCC’s Derek Steeley 8th in the recent polls.
Steeley showed early dominance and built a steady lead, but
Hillhouse from Northwest chipped back into the match. In the 3rd
period Steeley escaped to go up 7-5, but Hillhouse surged and got a
takedown to knot it up, then in a furious scramble Steeley high
arched and head picked Hillhouse for the defensive fall. Northwest
would answer with back to back falls at 133 and 141 to move ahead
12-6. Justin Ringold would suffer an 8-10 setback for Neosho and
the Panthers were now in a 15-6 deficit. Then a spark of energy
came to the mat, as Shawn Thomas made his debut as a Panther. Down
late 8-6, Thomas hit a big 5 point move to go up 11-8 before his
opponent got a final escape giving Thomas an 11-9 victory over an
opponent that came in nationally ranked 9th in the
nation. Mike Vieira took the momentum shift and went on to win at
165 by a 6-4 decision now pulling the Panthers within 3 pts. Aaron
Butler would give up a major decision at 174 to the 4th
ranked individual in NJCAA, before Ralph Manous took a win by
forfeit. The dual was now 19-18 in favor of Northwest going into
the last two weights. Kris Powell would suffer defeat by fall at
197, before Jake Kober who was also making his debut would lose an
8-0 major decision to the nation’s number 1 heavyweight. Final

The Panthers would rest while NW Wyoming and 15th ranked
Pratt duked it out, when that match was done (NW won
24-21), the two KJCCC foes were ready to butt heads.
Earlier in the season Neosho lost a heartbreaking 1 point
loss to the Beavers, and now redemption was on their
minds. Steeley would control his match from the start to
finish, but couldn’t get the bonus point victory he had
earlier in the season and thus settled for an 8-4 decision.
Next up, Neosho was able to capitalize on Pratt’s
misfortune and pick up a win by default as Pratt’s wrestler
was unable to make weight, which now gave Neosho a 9-0 lead.
Pratt would take the reigns and win the next 2 matches by
decision and pull closer, and trail only 9-6. With 6
weights remaining, this looked like it could go down to the
wire, much like the 1st battle between these
teams, however Neosho would surge ahead winning 4 in a
row. Shawn Thomas won by major decision at 157, before
Mike Vieira would pull off an upset of 9th ranked
Travis Budke (a returning All-American). Aaron Butler
picked u a decision at 174, and then in the battle of the
Ralph’s, Ralph Manous of Neosho would edge 2009 National
Qualifier Ralph Major 7-5. Up 22-9 Neosho had the dual
won, but Pratt would make sure that they got the last word
in on the scorebook. Inola boys John Arnold and Kris
Powell would wrestle tough for the panthers, but would
suffer defeat by 5-8 and 3-12 scores.

Central Missouri Open
The Neosho Panther wrestlers were on the road this past weekend to
Warrensburg, Missouri for the University of Central Missouri Open.
The Open brought in top notch teams from all over the Midwest and
featured Big 12 powers Oklahoma State as well as Missouri in the one
day event. 125 pound freshman Derek Steeley continued his brilliant
rookie campaign by recording a 4-1 record on the day. Steeley
started off the tournament by securing falls over his first and 2nd
round opponent in a combined 3 minutes and 49 seconds. In the
championship quarterfinals, Steeley would face off against Oklahoma
State’s Ladd Rupp. Steeley and Rupp were in a very tight knit match
throughout the competition until Rupp was able to secure a cradle
opportunity late and pin Steeley. Once on the back side of the
bracket Steeley came roaring back with another fall, this time over
a foe from the Missouri Tiger’s squad, before ending the day with a
a wild 20-14 victory over host Central Missouri’s James Wauer,
before bowing out of the competition due to injury.
Muskogee, Oklahoma freshman Mike Vieira was the only other Panther
with multiple victories as he broke even with a 2-2 showing on the
day, winning 12-6 over Newman’s Austin Workman in the first round,
Vieira would then run into Intermat Wrestling’s 7th
ranked NCAA DI wrestler Nick Marable of Missouri, who would hand
Vieira defeat in a mere 1 minute 12 seconds. Vieira came back and
would pick up a major decision victory over a NCAA DII opponent from
Central Oklahoma, before taking his 2nd loss of the
evening to familiar foe, DW Bradshaw of Missouri Valley. Last week
in the Dan Harris Open at Baker, Bradshaw won by a dominating score
of 24-9, but this week Vieira was able to close the gap, but still
come up short in an 8-6 contest.
Newcomer to 2009 team, Alfonso Osuna tallied a major decision on the
day to pick up a win at the UCM Open and was also joined in winning
a match at the open by 4 familiar faces to NCCC wrestling when
returnees Justin Ringgold, Adam Cline, Cody Eaton, and Matt McNabb
all picked up victories as well.
Neosho will next be on the road to Oklahoma City University for a
dual on Thursday, before making the trek up to Omaha for the
Kaufmann-Brand Open on Saturday hosted by the University of
Nebrasaka-Omaha.

Baker Open
The Neosho Panther wrestling team made the
short trip up to Baldwin City, KS for the inaugural Dan Harris
Bobcat Open hosted by Baker University. The Panthers
had 19 individuals compete in the
tournament and had a strong showing in the process with 11
individuals coming out with at least one win on the day. The
biggest highlight for the Panther’s was the fact they had 4
individuals finish in the top 6. Leading the charge for the
Panther’s was Tuttle, Ok freshman Zach Simpson. Simpson wrestling
at 141 pounds, started the tournament by
earning back to back falls to advance to the semifinals
before a tough fought 9-5 victory over #1 seed Bryan Williams of
York College. Simpson would later take on Ramon Willis of Pratt in
the finals, but would get caught late in the first period off of a
scramble and would be pinned to finish
the tournament as the runner up. At 125 Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
freshman Derek
Steeley advanced to the semifinals in the same fashion as
Simpson by dispatching of two foes by fall. It was in the
semifinal match though that Steeley
would suffer his first defeat of the season to Dana College’s Aaron
Wilcox. Bouncing back Steeley would go
on to win his consolation semi final by fall before picking up an
11-4 decision in the bronze medal match. 2
more wrestlers would find themselves in top finishes with
Montana Carson taking 6th place at 141, and Ralph
Manous taking 6th at 184
pounds. Freshman Derrick
Ageday of Hollis, NY also wrestling at
165 avenged a loss from the Pratt dual by stunning returning All
American Travis Budke by a 3-0 shutout in the opening round of the
open. Ageday along with teammates Josh
Isam of Sapulpa, OK
and team co-captain Justin Ringgold of Wichita, KS would
pick up multiple wins yet fail to place.
Ageday would win 3 matches on the day while
Isam and Ringgold would each contribute
2 wins in the column to the Neosho team on the day. Wrestlers also
winning matches but failing to place for the Panther Wrestling team
included Adam Cline, Trey
Vicknair, Matt McNabb, and Kris
Powell. Neosho next will host rival Labette on Thursday at the
Chanute campus with a 7pm match time.

Pratt slips past Panthers for a 1 point win
Conference action got underway on
Thursday, when the Neosho wrestling team made the trek out to Pratt
Community College for a 7pm dual. Following a random draw for starting
weight classes, the action would begin at the 174 pound weight class.
Little Rock, Arkansas sophomore Aaron Butler was tied up late in the
match with Alex Feldkamp when the two wrestlers got into a scramble for
position with time winding down, as the clock went backwards and time
elapsed, Butler found himself behind Feldkamp with 2 seconds on the
clock to score the 6-4 decision and propel Neosho to an early lead.
Ralph Manous would follow suit with a win for Neosho by racking up
several combinations of 2 point maneuvers, but when time was over he
couldn’t seal the crucial bonus points for the Panthers and only won by
a 7 point decision. The momentum would shift and Pratt would claim the
next two weight classes with Trey Vicknair bumping up from 184 to lose a
narrow 3-2 match to national qualifier Tyler Downs of Pratt. John
Arnold gave up weight and went up against Austin Hamm and lost in the
process, however Arnold was able to hit a late escape to only lose by 7
as well and narrowly avoiding bonus points from a potential major
decision. At 125 Derek Steeley a freshman from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
would go to the mat and would find himself in a rare hole trailing 6-2
after the first period to Jesse Barber who put Steeley on his back with
nearly 30 seconds or more on the clock with the Gumby-like Steeley
finding a way to avoid a major setback. Steeley chose down in the 2nd
and was being ridden tough again by Barber. Then Barber went for the
turn and Steeley went with him, however this time as he was going to his
back, Steeley high arched his body and picked Barber’s head and
simultaneously the referee slapped the mat for the defensive pin giving
Neosho a 12-6 lead. Stephen Kendrick of Skiatook, Ok would come up next
at 133 and after battling for 2 periods found him-self all knotted up
with Kevin Callahan of Pratt. It was then late in the 3rd
when the conditioning of Kendrick would come into play by scoring an
escape, followed by a 4 point move from feet to back to put away his
opponent. The see-saw battle would continue when Neosho would drop a
crucial 11-2 major decision as well as a 10-8 decision at 141 and 149
respectively; however the Panthers still lead 15-13. Josh Isam would
give a cushion for the team to work with by picking up a 7-4 decision at
157, meaning only a pinfall would allow Pratt to win the dual outright
in the final match contested. Neosho sent out true freshman Derrick
Ageday from Hollis, NY to take on Pratt’s lone All American from a
year ago Travis Budke. Ageday looked poised and confident, bouncing
with enthusiasm around the circle and holding his own for a while, but
then inexperience caught up with him, when the Pratt sophomore Budke hit
his chin-whip to send Ageday to his back and shortly there after claim
the pin and 6 points for the Pratt Beaver wrestling team. Although
Neosho never trailed in the dual all night, at the end it was a one
point setback for the Panther’s who now are 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in
conference. Neosho is next at Baker Open on Sunday before hosting
Labette here at 7pm on Thursday.

Panthers open season 35-9 victory over WSU Club
The Panther wrestling team of Neosho hosted the
Wichita State Shocker club team in a dual on Sunday afternoon. The
varsity squads from both teams took to the mat with the action starting
off at the 125 pound weight class. Derek Steeley a freshman out of
Broken Arrow, Oklahoma was able to rack up 3 takedowns in the 1st
period before disposing of Evan Amaro at the 3:40 mark by fall. WSU
was open at 133, so the action went on to 141 where Josh Wolfe of Neosho
went into the 3rd period up 8-4 on Columbus native Nick
Thomas, before rattling off 7 points late in the match and adding riding
time to win 15-4. At 149 sophomore captain Justin Ringgold of Wichita,
KS trailed 2-1 after the first period, but could only make it to a 2-2
score before giving up 2 more takedowns and suffering the first defeat
of the day to the Shockers 8-3. Josh Isam a freshman from Sapulpa
would get things going again for the Panthers who were up 16-3 in the
team standings by picking up a 7-4 victory, before Hollis, NY freshman
Derrick Ageday went on a rampage with 12 points alone coming off of
takedowns in a 18-7 major decision. At 174 Aaron Butler of Little
Rock, AR would take on 3 time Club National Qualifier Nate Alvarez of
the Shockers. After a scoreless first period, Alvarez took a quick
reversal to go up 2-0, however, Butler earned an escape and a takedown
to go up 3-2 before adding on more escape and winning 4-2 . At 184
Ralph Manous a freshman from Okmulgee, OK showed that he had very
little rust from being away from the sport for a year, by recording a
35 second fall of the Shocker’s Jake Fox. The dual would end with back
to back matches by Inola, OK natives Kris Powell and Jon Arnold.
Powell down to 197 this year after being 285 last year struggled to get
any offense going early and was trailing 7-1 after the first period to
Kenny Brown who spent the last few years wrestling with the Marines.
Powell continued to struggle and Brown was on the verge of a tech fall
when Powell’s shoulders went flat and WSU recorded the victory by
pin. Finally at heavyweight Jon Arnold made things a lot more
exciting then it should have. With under a minute to go in the match
Arnold gave up a takedown to trail 4-3, but with time close to the end
Arnold escaped, turned and pounced at his opponent and nabbed a 2 pt
takedown to seal a 6-4 victory. Neosho would defeat Wichita State
35-9 in varsity action and then go on to compete in 9 exhibition
matches with freshmen Alfonso Osuna and Trey Vicknair picking up
victories at 141 and 197, as well as sophomore Powell who won by fall
at 4:32 bumping back up to his old heavyweight class. Neosho is next on
the road at Pratt on Thursday before heading to the Baker Open on
Sunday.
