Panthers finish 8th place at NJCAA Nationals. The 14th ranked Neosho Panther
wrestling team took 7 individuals up to Rochester, Minnesota to compete
in the 2008 NJCAA National Junior College wrestling championships and
came home with an 8th place finish, 3 All-Americans, and 1
special individual honor. Donte Butler from St. Louis, Missouri had a
phenomenal tournament going 5-1 in the 2 day event held at the UCR
Regional Sports Center. Of the 5 wins, Butler scored 4 lightning
quick falls, all coming in the first period in a combined time of 5
minutes and 49 seconds. The amazing display of dominance not only
helped Butler bring back a 3rd place finish, but also allowed
him to earn the Bruce Traphagen Award which goes to the wrestler with
the most falls in the least amount of time at the National Tournament.
Butler ends his freshman season with a 30-9 record, and will return
next year as the early favorite to win it all being the top returning
All American at the 125 weight class.
On the brink of elimination Friday night, Kenny
Carney of Jackson, NJ pulled off two thrilling overtime victories in a
row to land him into the All American rounds on Saturday morning.
Carney had several nail biters with 7 of his 8 matches being decided by
3 points or less. Losing in the quarterfinals , Carney bounced back
with 4 consecutive decision victories before falling in a rematch to
his quarterfinals nemesis in the consolation semifinals. In the 5th
place match, a late takedown sealed the victory for Carney’s foe, and
Neosho finished 6th nationally at 165, picking up its second
All-American of the tournament.
At 174 pounds, Jason Green a sophomore from
Pawnee, Oklahoma was the lone returner from last years Neosho team to
make a return trek to the National Championships. Remembering a
disappointing 2007 finish, Green came in with a renewed since of focus
and it showed immediately as he easily outscored his opening 3 opponents
by a combined 27-6 in breezing to the finals. Once in the finals
however Green was faced with a challenger that was racking up points
just as much as he was. The foe from NIACC (North Iowa Area Community
College) had scored 31 points in his 3 previous matches in making it to
the finals, and in the end when these two high powered offenses
collided something had to give and unfortunately Neosho was on the
losing side of it, as Green fell in the finals by a 7-4 decision, but
ended his career as a National Runner Up, and gave Neosho at least 3
All Americans for the 7th time in 9 tries at the National
Tournament.
The remaining four wrestlers for Neosho all fell
short of All American Honors, but did their team and school proud by
scoring points in the rugged 2 day event all going 1-2 in the NJCAA
Championships, those wrestlers were: Jeremy Lawley (141lbs- Tulsa,
OK), Ty Jaquess (149lb- Barnsdall, OK), Sam Robbins (197lbs-Skiatook,
OK), and Dan “Boston” Pynn (Hwt-Billerica, Mass).
NATIONALS UPDATE: As of
Friday, February 15th, Neosho County Wrestling learned that Sam
Robbins from Skiatook, Oklahoma will now be representing the
Panthers at the NJCAA Championships in Rochester, MN. Robbins
becomes the 7th member of the Panther wrestling squad to qualify for
nationals, joining previous qualifiers Donte Butler, Jeremy Lawley,
Ty Jaquess, Ken Carney, Jason Green, and Dan "Boston" Pynn.
6 qualify for Nationals- The Neosho Panther
wrestling team had 7 top 4 finishes over the weekend en route to
qualifying 6 wrestlers at the West Central District Wrestling
Championships. The event which took place in Rock Springs, Wyoming on
the campus of Western Wyoming Community College has been billed in the
past as the toughest junior college national qualifier based on the high
quality of teams, and this year was no exception. Entering the
competition on Saturday, February 9th were 3rd
ranked Colby, 4th ranked Labette, 5th ranked
Northwest Wyoming, 6th ranked Western Wyoming, 16th
ranked Pratt, and the Neosho Panthers rounded out the 6 team field
coming in at 9th nationally.
The Panthers got out of the gates quickly with back
to back falls at 125 and 133 by Donte Butler and Rory Kendall. At 149
Jeremy Lawley then chimed in with at 5-2 win to keep the winning ways
going. At 149 Ty Jaquess earned a 1st round by. At 157
Dustin Burton was caught midway through the 2nd period in a
close match and suffered defeat by fall. 165 Ken Carney also received
an opening bout injury default victory. Jason Green at 174 also got a
free pass to the semis with a bye of his own, before teammate Tim Cross
at 184 would wrestle against a familiar Pratt foe and suffer a loss by
fall. At 197 Sam Robbins went into sudden victory with the 6th
ranked kid in the nation, only to give up a takedown and lose 3-1.
Dan “Boston” Pynn at heavyweight came in a major underdog in the 285
class with very little varsity experience on the year, the former
heavyweight back up found himself in commanding control of a match with
a much larger foe. Not to be deterred, Boston used his strength and
quickness to wear down the opponent before lifting him high above his
head and tossing him down to his back for the fall! At the end of this
first round, Neosho found a short lived lead atop the board.
The 2nd round proved to be everything
opposite of the joyous first round that Neosho had. Slowly, 1 by 1 a
Neosho wrestler fell to the dismay of the coaches and fans in
attendance. At 125, 3rd ranked Donte Butler lost an 8-4
decision to 4th ranked Lyle Evans of Western Wyoming to
the delight of the home crowd. At 133 8th ranked Rory
Kendall lost a narrow 2-0 decision to 7th ranked Scott
Berens of Labette. Jeremy Lawley couldn’t get the Panthers out of a
slump either as he lost 2-1 to Colby’s 5th ranked Lyubomir
Kumbarov. Finally a temporary sigh of relief would come when Ty
Jaquess at 149 used a big move early on to set the pace and hold off a
hungry Aaron Hynick of Labette. At 165 Ken Carney continued the Neosho
slump losing to Delanno Palmore of Colby 8-5. Jason Green at 174 used
at fall at the 5:13 mark to bring something positive to the semi-final
round, before Dan “Boston” Pynn found himself outmatched and quickly
dispatched at the hands of the top heavyweight in the nation, Brandon
Rupp of Western Wyoming.
With only Jaquess and Green a sure thing in terms
of qualifying, the Panthers had to step up big to finish in the Top 3,
as the 9 wildcards weren’t assured to anybody. The Panthers answered
big by having a flashback of round 1 and 4 of 6 wrestlers competing in
that round advanced on to the 3rd place match, giving them
the opportunity to qualify with a win in the bronze medal match. Rory
Kendall and Tim Cross both picked up major decision victories with Ken
Carney winning by another injury default. Jeremy Lawley had a 1pt
victory to seal up his spot in the consolation finals. Donte Butler
would wrestle his last match of the day with a loss by fall in 2:35 to
finish a distant 5th, where he would have to hope for a
wildcard birth. Dustin Burton took a 2nd straight loss as
well and would later go on to win in the 5th place match to
finish the day 1-2. Sam Robbins was quickly outmanned by 4th
ranked Skip Crooks in a mere 51 seconds, and finished 5th as
well.
The 3rd place matches were set, and
Neosho was in a battle for bronze in the team race at this point. Rory
Kendall was the first man up, and looked to be doing fine, until a
shifty counter had him looking up at the lights, and the ref slapping
the mat to end the freshman’s season, as he would later find out he did
not earn a wildcard birth. Jeremy Lawley had a tough 4-1 loss, but
managed to gain a wildcard and punched his ticket to Nationals. Ken
Carney then shined brightly and put up a 14-3 thumping to automatically
qualify. Tim Cross had the chance to avenge an earlier defeat, but came
up short once again, this time falling to the Pratt foe 7-6. At this
point Neosho was only assured of 3 National Qualifiers, and Dan Pynn’s
fairytale run seemed like it would meet its fate, but then when it
counted the most Dan dug deep and pulled a 4-3 victory off and cement
his way to Rochester, Minnesota for Nationals in 2 weeks.
The finals came around and Ty Jaquess took to the
mat with Colby’s 3rd ranked TJ Hepburn. Hepburn quickly
used his speed and set the tone going up 6-3 before taking down Jaquess
down one final time and turning him to his back to earn the fall. It
should be noted that Hepburn was 2nd in the votes for the
Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament. At 174 Jason Green took on Joe
Yust of Labette, an individual hungry to get his hands on a Neosho
Panther, after going 0-2 against Green and his backup on the year. Yust
was caught early with a big move and it looked as if Green was going to
cruise to another easy win, but Yust stayed strong and narrowed the gap,
before the final whistle finally blew, and Jason Green of Neosho was
crowned West Central Champion.
The Panthers qualified 6 wrestlers to take 4th
in the team race with 57.50 points, only 6 points behind host Western
Wyoming, and only 1 point ahead of Northwest Wyoming in a tight race
for 3rd place. KJCCC rivals Labette and Colby finished 1st
and 2nd in the team race with 13 of the 20 finalists coming
from those two teams. Pratt finished a distant 6th.
Neosho travels to Rochester, Wyoming for Nationals
the 22nd and 23rd of February.

Panthers Outshine Stars-
The 9th ranked Panthers hosted Oklahoma City
University on Wednesday, January 30th in their final dual
competition of the season. Having lost to OCU earlier in the season,
Neosho wrestlers knew it would be a tough challenge. Things got off to
a quick start when Donte Butler recorded a fall at 125 and Rory Kendall
followed him at 133 with a 7-0 shutout. Jeremy Lawley used a 5pt
second period to help him take and maintain the lead in a 6-4
decision. Ty Jaquess then was able to secure a takedown and fall in
the 1st period to send the Panthers up 18-0 at this point.
The Stars would strike back with the next 3 weights, as Neosho’s Dustin
Burton, Ken Carney, and Jason Green all succumbed to defeat by tough
decision losses. Tim Cross looked to be heading down the same path as
his 3 previous teammates, but used a late 6 point surge to send the
match into overtime where he eventually took his foe down for the 10-8
decision. Sam Robbins controlled his match in a low scoring 6-3 bout
for a win at 197, then Dan Pynn went into double overtime and trailing
3-2 after the first 30 second ride out, was able to reverse and get
nearfall criteria of 2 more points to elevate him to a 6-3 win as well.

Neosho goes
3-1 at Meramec Duals-
Neosho Panther wrestling team wrestled four duals
over the course of two days while at the Meramec Duals. The
competition began with only one dual for the Friday session for the
Panthers, as NCCC would take on the 2nd ranked Meramec
Magic. Neosho got on an early roll winning 3 consecutive matches at
125, 133, and 141 with back to back falls by Donte Butler and Rory
Kendall, then by a major decision from Jeremy Lawley. Meramec got on
the board with a major decision of its own before Neosho picked up a
forfeit victory at 157 to put the Panthers up 22-4. The Magic lived up
to their moniker and pulled several quality wins out of their hat in
winning the next 4 weight classes by 2 decisions and 2 falls both back
to back before the heavyweights took to the mat and the score knotted at
22-22. Dan “Boston” Pynn wound up taking on Meramec’s #1 nationally
ranked kid from 197lbs, who bumped up in place of an injured starter.
Going into the 3rd period Boston only trailed 3-1, earning
an escape to narrow it to 3-2 his foe countered him once more and
clinched another takedown on the edge prior to going out of bounds. On
the restart in the middle Boston was caught off guard and slick move
from top with good leverage and power found Neosho suffering a loss by
fall and ending the dual 22-28 in favor of the host school.

With one dual out of the way in the Meramec Duals,
Neosho would awake the next morning to take on 3 consecutive foes,
starting with Marion Military Academy out of Alabama. Marion Military
recently finished 3rd place in the
National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Duals and is currently ranked 4th Nationally in the
NCWA coach’s poll. To open the dual NJCAA 3rd ranked Donte
Butler representing Neosho took on a tough CeeJay Hamilton who entered
the match as the #2 ranked NCWA wrestler and defending NCWA National
Champion. After 2 scoreless periods of wild scrambles and reshots, the
two battered combatants found the score all tied at 1-1. Butler tried
a shot, but was countered and riding time soon sealed as well, and
Marion Military earned the win 4-1 in an entertaining bout to watch.
Rory Kendall tried to get Neosho on the board at 133, but he too met
defeat trailing by a 7-1 margin early, he was able to chip back and
narrow the match to a final score of 6-11 in losing to the 3rd
ranked Ben Canning. Jeremy Lawley then got the momentum switch
desparately needed as a tight match late turned into a 3rd
period fall and a 6-6 deadlock in the team score going into 149. At
149, and 157 the Panthers would hit pay dirt once more pulling off 2
decisions before Ken Carney hammered out a major decision at 165 to put
the team score at 16-10. Drakkar Klose coming off a near upset of the
#1 ranked NJCAA wrestler the night before hit a fast takedown for a 2pt
lead early, but was reversed and rode out just as quick and could never
get back on track suffering a 13-3 defeat to the 7th ranked
NCWA foe. At 184 Tim Cross fired back with a 17-3 major decision,
before Sam Robbins and Dan Pynn lost by a decision and a fall
respectively to end the dual with a close 20-19 victory for the
Panthers.

team in the NJCAA in Division III (non scholarship schools). Neosho
overwhelmed the Minnesota school with a 28-0 lead heading into the 174
pound match after earning 2 forfeit victories, a win by fall, a major
decision and two hard fought decisions. At 174 and 184 Rochester would
get on the board with back to back decisions of their own in what was
nearly identical matches, both Drakkar Klose and Tim Cross, both of
Neosho headed into the 3rd period in a virtual deadlock on
the scoreboard in their respective matches only to give up 2pt
takedowns and 3 point nearfalls late. Sam Robbins and Dan Pynn closed
the door on a good dual with decision wins a piece to lift the Panthers
to a 34-5 victory.

After a long grueling 2 days of competition, Only 4 matches were
contested in a rematch of Rend Lake and Neosho from a dual they had at
last week’s Lincoln Duals. Neosho won the first four weights by
forfeit to go up 24-0. Finally at 157, a match took place and Ty Caron
for Neosho came up short losing a 9-2 decision. Neosho forfeited at
165, and then Drakkar Klose picked up 4 takedowns before turning his
opponent for the fall at 174. Tim Cross shutout his foe 13-0 for a
major at 184, before a rematch between Sam Robbins and RLC’s Aaron Jones
took place. Last week Robbins edged an athletic Jones with a 3rd
period takedown to clinch a victory, however this time it would be Jones
winning late in the third with a stall call being the decisive point in
a 2-1 defeat for Robbins.

Panther Wrestling goes 3-0 at
Lincoln Duals
1/18/2008- Lincoln, Illinois;
The 9th ranked Neosho Panther wrestling
squad headed up to Lincoln College for the Lincoln Duals this past
Saturday. The day got started in a big way with Neosho cruising to a
39-9 victory over 2nd year program Rend Lake College. The
Panthers won the first 3 weights by forfeits, before Barnsdall, Oklahoma
freshman Ty Jaquess picked up a 7-3 decision, and Shreveport, Louisiana
freshman Dustin Burton picked up another forfeit win to push the
Panthers ahead 27-0. Rend Lake College would finally squeak onto the
board when James Perez of RLC edged Neosho Freshman Drakkar Klose 9-8
with the deciding point being riding time. Jason Green (sophomore-
Pawnee, Oklahoma) then came on at 174 and dispatched of his foe with a 1st
period fall, before the Panthers forfeited at 184lbs. Skiatook,
Oklahoma freshman Sam Robbins then took to the mat at 197 and used a
late 3rd period takedown to break a 1-1 tie and claim a
3-1victory. Not to be outdone, Islip, New York freshman Christian
Wintons dug deep in his first match back on the mats in over a month to
pull out a tough 5-3 overtime win.
FINAL SCORE: NEOSHO 39 Rend Lake 9
Next up for the Panthers on the day was host
Lincoln College which is currently ranked 12th in the NJCAA.
St. Louis, Missouri freshman Donte Butler met an upset minded Ryan
Lessner who came in unranked and hungry to knock off the 3rd
ranked Neosho grappler. Trailing going into the 2nd period,
Butler used his quickness to score 5 points but was only up by 1 heading
into the 3rd stanza of the match. Lessner was able to score
an escape to tie the match, but Butler’s 1 minute plus time advantage
from the top position gave him an extra point and a narrow 8-7 win.
Rory Kendall (Fr- Vinita, Ok) then took to the mat like a man possessed
and in the process picked up an 11-0 major decision.
Jeremy Lawley (Fr-Tulsa, Oklahoma) then took to
the mat and had a late 3rd period takedown to clinch a 3-1
decision. Ty Jaquess then stepped onto the mat to face 6th
ranked Justin Hale. Hale controlled the match with a 1st
period takedown and then followed up with an escape and another takedown
to lead 5-0 going into the 3rd period. Jaquess countered a
Hale scoring opportunity late in the 3rd period and caught
the ranked foe on his back and registered the come from behind fall,
much to the dismay of the local Lincoln fans.
Neosho now lead 16-0 heading into the 157 match
where Allegan, Michigan freshman Ty Caron made his debut in a tough way,
by losing a 15-0 tech fall. Dustin Burton bumped up to 165 for this
dual and lost on a late takedown 5-4 and then Drakkar Klose up at 174
lost a slim 7-6 match as well, now putting the team score at 15-10
following a 3 match swing for Lincoln and a pair of point deductions on
both teams. At 184, Green’s 6-0 victory over a tough Ryan Lamagra
swung momentum back into the Panther’s corner, as Sam Robbins followed
suite at 197 with a decision of his own and Billerica, Massachusetts
freshman- Dan Pynn accepted the forfeit victory at
heavyweight. Final Score: NEOSHO 27 Lincoln 10
Final match of the day came against 15th
ranked Ellsworth Community College out of Iowa. Jared Grigg made his
debut for the Panthers with a 7-5 match to get things rolling for
Neosho. Rory Kendall continued his strong showing on the day and went
unscored on for the entire competition, this time winning a 4-0
decision. Jeremy Lawley accumulated 4 takedowns in a 13-6 route,
before Ty Jaquess and Dustin Burton both picked up forfeit wins at 149
and 157 respectively. Drakkar Klose, filling in at 165 clinched an
overtime win with a takedown to win 3-1 and Jason Green finished his day
3-0 with a 7-2 decision of his own. At 184 Neosho was open and
surrendered 6 points to Ellsworth, but then Sam Robbins at 197 came back
and pulled off another overtime victory in this dual for the Panthers
with an identical 3-1 decision. To end the day, heavyweight backup
Dan”Boston” Pynn took to the mat and trailed only 2-0 heading into the 3rd,
but taking down position in the last period proved to what his foe
wanted, as a very strong top wrestler turned Dan on 2 separate occasions
racking up 4 more points on nearfalls and finishing the match with a
riding time point to beat Boston by a 7-0 margin.

4 year THUMP!
January 15, 2008-
10th ranked Neosho County put on a
thumping of the 4 year NAIA member Bacone College’s varsity line-up.
The Panthers started the night with a bang getting back to back falls
from Rory Kendall and Jeremy Lawley before Ty Jaquess scored a
methodical 11-5 victory over his foe to bring the team score to 15-0
after just 3 matches. Dustin Burton then came out and had a 5-1 lead
midway through the 2nd period before sticking his foe as well
and giving the Panthers more cushion in the team score. Ken Carney
ranked 5th in the nation met a stubborn opponent but managed
to score five nearfall points, 4 takedowns, and 3 escapes in a scrappy
16-9 victory. Drakkar Klose was in a match that was so heated that his
opponent lost composure and swung a punch, landing Drakkar the win by
disqualification earning 6 points for the team, as well as resulting in
1 team point being deducted from the Bacone bench. Back to back falls
then happened again on the night for the hungry Panther mob as Jason
Green and Sam Robbins took command with thunderous 1st period
pins. It was then at Heavyweight where Bacone finally ended up on the
scoreboard in the positive side as Neosho freshman Christian Wintons was
beat narrowly 3-2. Donte Butler at 125 got a much needed night of rest
to end the dual with a forfeit win, and when it was all said and done,
the Panthers prevailed mightily.

Shorthanded Panthers suffer defeat
to Rival Labette.
January 10, 2008- The 10th ranked
Panther wrestling team headed down to Parsons, KS on Thursday, January
10th 2008 to take on the 3rd ranked Cardinals of Labette with four
starters out of the lineup the task was a huge one to say the least. The
Panthers started the night off with a big bang out of the gates as
Drakkar Klose a freshman from South Haven, Michigan bumped up from his
165 back up spot to help the team out and in the process pull a major
upset of not only a heavier foe, but one that was ranked 6th in the
nation by a 4-3 decision. That would be the only match determined by a
decision on the night as the next 9 weight classes combined for 6 falls,
2 forfeits, and 1 technical fall. At 184 Jason Green bumping up from his
nationally ranked 174 spot took on a formidable foe, but leading late in
the match was caught with a speedy move and put on his back, with the
slap of the official’s hand to the mat soon following there after. 197
Sam Robbins was quickly out maneuvered and could never recover from an
explosive takedown and surrendered a loss by fall as well. The Panthers
were then open at 285, and thus went into the 4th match of the night
down by a hefty 15 point deficit.
Then phenomenal freshman Donte Butler
(St. Louis Missouri), wasted very little time in bear-hugging his
opponent and recroding a 1st period fall of his own. At 133 Rory Kendall
had a narrow lead late, but once again the luck was on the side of the
Cardinals, and Rory was caught in a wild flurry and suffered a loss by
fall as well. At 141 freshman Danny Washington stepped on the mat from
the role of back up to starter once again on the season and saved a team
point by only losing by a technical fall. Next up for the Panthers was
Ty Jaquess who earned a much needed win with a thrilling fall from the
top position in the middle of the 2nd period. At 157 the Panthers we
open again, which lead us into the final match of the evening pitting
the 3rd ranked Cardinal wrestler against the Panther’s 5th ranked Ken
Carney. Carney defended the shots of his opponent fairly well, until a
slick and powerful move yet again caught the Panthers by surprise and he
too, soon met his fate losing the match by fall.

Neosho nips NIACC
December 7, 2007- Heading up to Mason City, Iowa to
dual the #10 ranked team in the Nation shouldn't have had Neosho nervous
being ranked 6th in the country, but when 4 of 7 Nationally ranked
wrestlers were not in the line up, the Panthers had plenty of what ifs.
All of that was put to ease though when several wrestlers stepped up in
fill in roles and narrowly beat the stingy home crowd during their Pack
the Stands promotion by a score of 27-23. The highest
anticipated match of the night was #4 Cody Hogan of NIACC vs. #3 Donte'
Butler of Neosho. Both wrestlers hail from Missouri, but it was
Butler winning the Show Me State show down with a lightning fast fall at
the 1:21 mark in the first period. Overall Neosho won 6
matches to 4, with both teams combining for 8 total bonus point matches
out of 10 wrestled, including the first 5 matches in a row.

Panthers topple 16th ranked Pratt
November 29, 2007-The Panther
Wrestlers went on the road to Pratt and came home with a decisive win
24-11. After drawing out of the hat the dual began at 141 and saw Pratt
open with two major decisions at 141 and 149 opening a 8-0 team lead.
NCCC then roared back with 4 straight wins including a first period fall
by Jason Green at 174 making the score 15-8. Daunte’ Nixon then lost a
extremely hard fought 6-4 double overtime match at 197 to the 7th
ranked wrestler in the nation. Finishing off the dual the Panthers
reeled off three more straight victories which included a come from
behind win at 125 by Donte’ Butler over 8th ranked Tom Edgmon.

Comments: With the injury bug at 141 we dug to our
third string for help and got a good effort from Washington not giving
up more than 4 team points. Burton came through with a much needed
win. Green wrestled his guy earlier this season to a decision and came
out big last night with a pin in the first. Nixon had a hard fought
loss, but is letting it be known he is capable. Butler found himself
behind 5-2 going into the third period and reached down deep and
outscored Edgmon 7-3 for the win. Carney, Wintons, and Kendall all gave
good efforts in solid wins. Overall the Panthers came out very business
like and got the job done. Next action for Neosho will be next Thursday
in a home dual vs. Bacone College at 7:00pm. Ending the semester the
Panthers then travel to North Iowa Area C.C. for a dual the following
evening and finish the weekend off with the tough Dick Walker
Invitational at Wartburg College on Saturday.
Panther Wrestling edged in first home dual
November 8, 2007 (Chanute, KS)-
The 12th ranked Neosho Panther Wrestling team pushed the 4th
ranked Labette County to the limit here on the campus of NCCC, with the
visiting Cardinals using a decision of 3-2 in the final bout of the
evening to clinch the dual 22-15. Neosho came out of the gates strong
with Donte Butler earning 5 takedowns
before cranking his opponent over to his back for the fall early in the
2nd stanza. Not to be outdone Jarod Spoon
making his debut in a Panthers uniform this year edged out his
opponent for a 4-2 victory.
Labette marched back though scoring 4 victories in
a row including a fall at 165 which put them up 13-9 at that point.
Jason Green and Tim Cross fought back with decision victories
at 174 and 184 a piece to narrow the gap to 15-16. Daunte Nixon at 197 lost a 5-2 decision
to the 6th ranked junior college wrestler in the nation giving teammate
Christian Wintons a chance to clinch
the dual at heavyweight. However 9th ranked Wintons
lost by a slim 3-2 margin to the 8th ranked foe, and thus the night
ended with Labette edging Neosho down the stretch in front of a packed
NCCC Panther Pavilion that saw a full house come out for a great night
of wrestling.

November 4, 2007-(Oklahoma City)
The 12th ranked NJCAA Neosho County
wrestlers fought valantly this weekend on the mat at the Abe Lemons
arena on the campus of Oklahoma City University against some very
formidable foes in the 3rd and 10th ranked teams in the National
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the 19th ranked
team in NCAA Division 1.
While the team scores were lop sided in all
three duals, our guys wrestled and competed hard. We lost 6 matches by 3
points or less so we were battling. This was an extremely tough opening
meet with all highly ranked teams in their respective divisions.
Jeremy Lawley turned in the best performance going 2-1 on the day
and losing a close bout with the OU starter.
Daunte Nixon and Ty Jaquess
each scored official wins and competed hard. We had some others get
wins or very good matches against starters in exhibition
matches. Overall our freshman got a eye opening experience before
opening with Labette here on Thursday and we needed that. And, now we
have breakdowns of area’s against opponents other than ourselves that we
can target to get better and improve. The University of Oklahoma happend
to hold both OCU and Missouri Valley scoreless, with NCCC being the only
team to break the Sooners shutout sweep.
