Finding Books and Other Resources

You can find out what books are at the NCCC's Chapman Library in Chanute by going to the Library's catalog.   This link may take some time to load, and requires Adobe Flash Player 10 to be loaded on your computer.  This is a free download and you may be prompted to download it, or you can go to http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

If you cannot download this software, you can find books through the older version of the Library's catalog.

Using the Library Online Catalog and Databases Off-Campus

The Library's Online Catalog and the online databases can be accessed from off-campus, but will require passwords.  You can always find the passwords after you have logged on to your student account in InsideNC.  See instructions below

Help

If you need any help in accessing the databases or with searching for information, you can call us at 620-431-2820, ext 244, e-mail through the Library Staff links on the menu on the left of this page, or use "Ask a Librarian" on the Library's main web page during the hours the Library staff is present.  If the staff is not present, you can type your question into "Ask a Librarian" and leave your e-mail address, and we will get back to you.

Online Databases

The Library offers access to many different databases of newspaper, journal and magazine articles in the areas of current events and social issues, health and allied health, nursing, business, computers, history, and literature, as well as academic versions of encyclopedias, electronic books and other reference materials.  All online databases are found on the Online Databases link on the Library Web page.

Although there are differences between Library databases, if you know how to search one database, you can usually transfer those skills to other databases.

Help for searching databases
The Library web page has many tutorials on how to search the different databases under the

link.  Also, in any database, look for a "Help" link to find out how to better search in that particular database.

Finding a Particular Journal or Journals in Specific Subject
You can see if the Library databases have a particular journal or journals in a particular subject by entering the title in the search textbox in EBSCO
A-to-Z, which is on the
Online Database link on the Library Web Page.  Or, you can search for journals with a particular subject in the title by entering a subject in the search textbox. Tutorial link: EBSCO A-to-Z Journal Title Search

What's the Difference between Popular and Scholarly Journals?

You may be asked by your instructor to find research from "scholarly" or "peer-reviewed" journals.   To find the difference between popular and scholarly magazines or journals, go to this excellent resource from Western Washington University.
