Kelley Newton enters his 1st season as Head Women’s Basketball Coach for the Panthers.
The 32-year old Newton is looking forward to moving the Panthers basketball program in the right direction. Coach Newton comes to Neosho after owning and coaching a women’s semi pro basketball team in Oklahoma (2008) and Kansas (2009 – 10). Both teams (On Point Lady Hoopers of Oklahoma and Kansas Lady Nuggets of Kansas) played in the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL). In 2008 Newton lead the Lady Hoopers to a berth in WBCBL National Tournament and In 2009 lead the Lady Nuggets to be the Midwest Division Champs and a berth the National Tournament. While coaching women the last three years coach Newton as had 4 ladies play professionally in other counties. overseas contracts
Prior to Coaching in the WBCBL, Coach Newton has experience coaching at University of North Alabama in Florence, AL for two season (2003–2005) under Bobby Champagne and Midland College for one season (2002–2003) under Scott Raines.
As a player, Newton was a two sport (Football and Basketball) stand out at Wyandotte High School playing varsity all for years at then a 6A high school in Kansas City, KS. Receiving offers to play football or basketball in college, Newton choose to attend Neosho County and play basketball for Jeff Guiot (Now Head Coach at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO). While at NCCC, Newton was a two year starter for the Panthers and earned All-Jayhawk Conference recognition and leading the conference in three-point percentage as a sophomore also averaging 18ppg, 5rpg, and 3apg.
After leaving NCCC, Newton went on the University of Oklahoma and played for Kelvin Sampson (Now assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks). In Newton’s first year he suffer a torn ACL a week before first game of the 98’ – 99 season and was a medical redshirt that year. The next season Newton was a key reserve of the Sooners that went 26 – 7, finished 3rd in the Big XII behind Iowa State and Kansas. Also was runner ups to Iowa State in the Big XII Tournament. Made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. As a senior Newton became a starter for the Sooners that went 27-7 won the Big XII South Division and was Big XII Tournament Champs (beating Missouri, Kansas, Texas) leading the team and the Big XII Conference in three-point accuracy, finished in the Top Five All-Time in OU history. Newton earned a BA in Sociology from University of Oklahoma.
Coach Kelley Newton is married to Kelly R. Newton and has one daughter Kyla R. Newton (four).
